Compression molding is a classic manufacturing process for thermosetting materials and composites. It is widely used in the production of electrical insulation parts, automotive structural components, architectural decorative parts and other products, serving as an important technical route for mass production of high-precision components in the manufacturing industry.
The core principle is as follows: a fixed quantity of raw material is placed into the cavity of a heated mold. After mold closing, pressure is applied. Under high temperature and high pressure, the material plasticizes and flows to fully fill the mold cavity. Cross-linking and curing take place under continuous temperature and pressure, and finished products with regular shapes are obtained after demolding. The three key parameters — temperature, pressure and holding time — work together and directly determine the density and mechanical properties of finished parts.
The complete production process consists of core steps. First is material preparation: weigh preforms according to product requirements and carry out preheating. Then load the material evenly into the mold cavity and close the mold. Next, gradually raise pressure and temperature following preset parameters to enable full cavity filling. Once the holding and curing duration is reached, open the mold to remove parts, followed by post-processing such as deflashing and inspection. Reliable compression molding tooling is essential to ensure smooth and stable production.
This process has prominent advantages: high dimensional accuracy, low deformation rate and excellent consistency within the same batch. Complex-shaped components can be formed in one single step with minimal secondary machining. The overall cost is manageable and production efficiency remains stable for mass orders.
However, it also has limitations. Mold design and fabrication costs are relatively high, making the process less cost-effective for small-batch orders. Proper matching of process parameters is challenging, requiring extensive experience from production operators.
High-quality compression molding tooling effectively improves process stability and reduces common molding defects including bubbles and short shots, forming the fundamental guarantee for product quality and production efficiency.
